Email Marketing Tips
Email Marketing Strategy
A lot of people think that email marketing is dead or dying because of all
the problems with spam filters, delivery issues and other problems. While
email marketing may not be as problem free as it was 10 years ago, it is
certainly still a viable form of making a living online. All you need is
a game plan and some decent tools to work with. Hopefully, this article will
give you some strategies that you can use for your email marketing campaigns.
The first thing you need to do is decide what kind of email marketing campaign
you want to use. The one thing that I strongly suggest against is buying
leads, loading them into an autoresponder and sending ads out to them. Most
of these leads, unless you really know where they are coming from, are harvested
from people who will have no idea what you're emailing you about. You will
find out what spam complaints really are and most likely end up getting your
ISP to shut you down permanently.
One strategy you can use is what I call the one shot strategy. There are
many sites on the Internet, called FFA sites, that provide a service to ad
posters where they allow them to post their ads for free. In return, they
agree to get one email from each FFA owner. To own your own FFA page is a
cheap solution. Some are a little as $10 a month. In return, you'll get to
email hundreds, and sometimes thousands of people a day. It's one shot for
each person, but if you have a good enough email ad, offering them something
like a free report to get them into your autoresponder, you can actually
build quite a nice list in this manner.
Another strategy is to simply go straight for the autoresponder series. To
effectively utilize this strategy, you're going to have to use other forms
of promotion in order to get people into your autoresponder series. This
can be done by using the method described above, which is another form of
email advertising, or you can do something like writing articles and submitting
them to directories. In the bio boxes of these articles, you can direct people
to a free report or ebook that they can get by subscribing to your autoresponder
series. Once they're in, you would then send them a number of follow up messages
in an attempt to sell them on your product or service. It's best though to
give them a lot of good content in the process so that they don't feel like
you're just selling to them.
In whatever email marketing strategy you use, you need to decide if you're
going to try to sell to them directly or send them free information first
in an effort to win them over. There is no right or wrong here. With solid
products that really fill a burning need, you can probably sell people right
off. But with most things, prospective buyers need to see your site about
7 times before they commit to buying. So it's probably best to get them into
an autoresponder series. With a one shot "buy or die" email, you risk losing
a lot of sales that you might have gotten down the road.
Email Marketing Tips
If you're considering going into email marketing, there are some things that
you will want to be aware of in order to avoid having your campaign fall
flat on its face. Email marketing isn't as easy as it was back in the old
days now that we have all these spam filters and ISPs acting like traffic
cops. So if you want your email marketing campaign to get off the ground,
you may want to read some of the tips in this article. They very well may
save your life.
Since I've brought up the subject of spam, let's get that part of it out
of the way first. For starters, never send unsolicited email. It will only
end up getting your ISP to shut you down and fast. You only want to send
emails to people who have specifically opted in to get information from you.
Otherwise, it is spam, plain and simple. This is a good way to have your
reputation ruined for life.
Even if you don't spam people, there is a chance that your emails won't be
delivered because of the spam filters that many of the ISPs use. See, even
if an email isn't technically spam, these filters have no way of knowing
that. The filters go by the words that you use in your subjects and emails.
The problem with this is that the spam filters are not perfect and sometimes
will mistake a word used in a completely different context and flag it as
spam. I'm not going to go into specific detail of what words are generally
considered spam because we'll be here all day. However, there are many free
sites on the Internet that will check your email message for spam content
and give it a score. Generally, a score under 2 is sale. A score of 2 to
5 is borderline and anything over 5 will usually be regarded as spam and
not delivered.
Another thing you want to do when you're running an email marketing campaign
is make sure your subjects are captivating. It doesn't matter how good your
email ad itself is. If the subject of your ad is dull and lackluster, nobody
is going to read your email. So you want to use subject lines that are
interesting. The best way to gauge this is to look at the emails that you
receive and take a look at the ones that got YOUR attention. The reason is
because of the subject. But please, don't use subjects like "You just got
a payment" or "Message from admin" as these subjects will get you into a
lot of trouble.
Finally, in the email ad itself, you want to make sure that it's well structured.
It should have an intro a middle and a conclusion with a call to action,
if you're trying to get somebody to buy something. Some people ramble on
in emails with no direction. That is a sure way to lose your prospect.
Hopefully, these few tips will make your email campaigns just a little more
effective.
Email Marketing Statistics
I don't know why, but people love statistics. Most don't do a darn thing
with them, but people love statistics. Do YOU love statistics? Well, if you
do and you're into email marketing or interested in getting into email marketing,
these statistics may surprise you, or not. Hopefully, you'll find them useful
and give you some idea of whether or not it's going to be worth running that
brand new email campaign of yours.
Okay, here's a great statistic and a question that I get asked a lot. What's
the best day of the week to send out your email campaign? Well, I was going
to say Tuesday, based on my own level of success with Tuesday mailings, and
when I looked it up, sure enough, Tuesday was the top day of the week with
25.4% of emails sent on Tuesday getting opened. Tuesday is closely followed
by Wednesday and then Thursday. The worst days of the week are Saturday and
Sunday, both under 1%. I kind of knew that too.
What about the best time to send emails? Well, it seems that this would be
either early in the morning or late in the evening. Most likely this is because
early in the morning people are just getting into work and the first thing
they do is check their email. The evening reason is probably because most
people are getting home from work and again, are checking their email. Logical,
right? See, you don't really need statistics. Just a logical mind.
To further back up the stats above, do you know that almost 75% of all emails
delivered get opened between 6 AM and 6 PM. Just goes to show you that once
people are home and done with dinner, they're done with the computer. It's
American Idol and Dancing With The Stars. So, if you're thinking of running
an email marketing campaign, send your emails out early.
Here's a stat that a lot of people are interested in. What percent of your
emails do you think get delivered and does it matter which ISP it is? Well,
the answer to the second part of that question is that it most certainly
DOES matter. Many ISPs are notorious for blocking emails, no matter how clean
they are. For example, while Compuserve only blocks 11.8% of all emails coming
in, which is the best, Excite blocks, hold onto your hat, 50.7% of all emails
coming in. So, if you have an Excite account, forget about getting many of
the emails that you're looking for.
This is a stat that may surprise you with all the spam flying around. Did
you know that 95% of all emails delivered are can spam compliant? I find
that odd since Excite blocks 50.7% of your email and even Compuserve, which
is the best, still blocks 11.8% of your email. So a lot of email that isn't
really spam is not making it through.
I could go on, but I think that's enough for now. Did you find those statistics
interesting? Will they help you with your email marketing? I hope so. As
for myself, I just send the mail and hope for the best.
